BLOG FOR NOVEMBER #1

Manufacturers

We have a number of registered Manufacturers on www.craft-e.co.uk.  By selecting the manufacturer of your choice from the front page you will be directed to their products (across all categories).  So you can see the range of stock the manufacturer has to offer.

Tell us about you

We would like to feature our skilled Manufacturers on the craft-e website.  If you have a story to tell, please write to us and tell us a bit about you.  Please provide us with a photograph, and a few paragraphs about what you enjoy doing in your specialist craft, how you got started and where you exhibit your stock.

Become a Registered Manufacturer

Are you a member of a Guild or a professional Artist or Design Maker?  Would you like to become a registered Manufacturer on the www.craft-e.co.uk website?  Or if you are already a registered craft-e.co.uk Provider and would like to be listed as a manufacturer then please provide us with information about your Guild or Business by contacting us:  enquiries@craft-e.co.uk.

ATTENTION ALL KNITTERS

March 3rd, 2011

Would you like to sell your knitted designs on line?

Many people want hand-made items that you simply can’t find in shops and stores. That’s why at www.craft-e.co.uk we offer quality individual hand-made items direct from the internet.

If you have stock to sell and don’t have a web-site then this could be just right for you! Or are you a proficient knitter and would like to earn some cash by selling your knitted items using our patterns and material then read on.

Do you advertise your hand-knitted items on a website? Does the web-site have the ability to sell direct? Can the website (and especially your work) be easily found? If your answers are ‘No’, then this could be a really good opportunity for you.

We specialise in quality Hand Made items (not necessarily Home Made – there is a distinct difference) and differentiate ourselves from other websites in that all items for sale have to be made by hand (ie the craft of using specialist tools and designing the piece is what it’s all about). We feel each item being hand-made will be unique, so no two items are identically the same.

People can’t always easily find Your.name@your.address.co.uk, and so at www.craft-e.co.uk we provide a specialist website that is advertised and marketed so that people can find your products.

What we charge
Our prices are probably cheaper than any other similar internet website – we offer a simple pricing system with no commission charges on sales. For example you could sell 1 designed and hand-made jacket for just 50p (per month). It’s really easy – you decide how long you want to display it, or change it for something else, and when you’re done it is quick and simple to replace, remove or suspend it (this is our Casual Trader Rate). We also offer an Individual Trader rate – for those skilled individuals who have plenty to sell and want to trade on their own, and a Group Trader Rate for a number of skilled artisans who would like to run a group membership and share the costs. The only additional fee you pay is the small recharge made for using PayPal when an item is sold.

Craft-e Newsletter – July 2010

August 10th, 2010

Following on from last month’s blog I have now created that training facility that I was talking about. It has been an interesting journey and I now have over 800 places available for individuals covering a range of interesting and informative art and craft related topics. There is something for everyone, at all capability levels and adult age groups. I have been fortunate to be able to set them up in four different towns: Weymouth / Dorchester / Portland and Bridport.

Some of my courses consist of a series of lessons and build to provide a good insight into that topic. For example, Watercolours for beginners with Wendy Braden teaches you about enjoying colours, mixing colour and how to make the best use of the medium. Once you’ve mastered Watercolours you might like to have fun with Acrylics too.

Likewise, Sarah Fraser, our corset maker and dress designer is running a series of workshops entitled: “Fun with Funky Fabrics”, and “Creating your own Fabric or Artpiece”. Not to be missed for those interested in working with textiles.

Some of my other workshops are taster sessions, where people will be able to sample and learn about a new skill. With the opportunity to learn about the subject in depth with series of sessions to follow. For example Lu Jones is running taster sessions on Quantum Energy and getting in touch with your psyche. Having been along to the taster session you can then decide if you would like to learn more with that subject and join the series of workshops over 6 – 8 weeks during the autumn.

All these fantastic classes will give people an opportunity to try out new skills, obtain information and knowledge, have a go, and the opportunity to meet other likeminded people. Just the thing for the shorter days when we can’t be on the beach sunning ourselves!

The workshops start in September 2010 and there are a number to chose from with other locations and classes being designed as I write.

Workshops available include:

  • Photography: the Basics cover getting the best out of your digital camera using your own laptop. The more advanced course enables you to create your own calendar and family album;
  • Learn to paint with Watercolours and Acrylics;
  • Drawing Life;
  • Working with Beads – create beautiful accessories and jewellery, or even mend or remake using existing beads;
  • Basic craft skills – learn to knit, crochet, sew, weave, embroider etc
  • Caricatures;
  • Patchwork;
  • Quilting for beginners – learn basic quilting techniques;
  • Feltwork and Felt Pictures;
  • Card making – sumptuous paper craft;
  • Movie Making – use your own recording and learn what to do with them and publish on YouTube®.

And others to follow.

If you would like to know more details, check prices and availability and book a course then please go to www.craft-e.co.uk and look under Craft-e Workshops tab. Or indeed if have a craft skill you would like to share with others, and have some previous experience as a trainer then please contact me enquiries@craft-e.co.uk.

Events taking place this month includes the fantastic Dorset Arts and Crafts exhibition at Bovington. It was truly as inspiration of how much talent is among us!

CRAFT-E NEWSLETTER – June 2010

July 9th, 2010

Some time ago I took part in helping inexperienced people to start their own businesses.  This voluntary work helped me to realise that there are a lot of people who struggle with access to IT and knowledge required to be successful, especially as IT plays such a key role in any business, whether it is marketing your company, corresponding and invoicing customers, or finding a new way to sell your stock.

One of my passions is making things that are useful, pleasing and fun to make.  I grew up in a family that made most household and clothing items.  (There was not the choice that there is now.)  My family had a wide range of skills from upholstery, artwork and furniture making to millinery and embroidery.

Nowadays many families don’t have the time or maybe the knowledge to make their own house-wares, clothing, gifts or artist decorations.  Does this mean that the knowledge is not being passed on?  Is craftwork a dying art form?  Knowledge – it’s all about knowledge.

I would liek to see the revival of the skills that were part of our forefather’s lifestyles and, along with sport and computer gaming, our younger generation to find time and interest to learn a new skill.  This is our heritage and we should work at encouraging those who want to learn a new sill to be given the opportunity to do so, whatever their age! So with this in mind, I have created www.craft-e.co.uk – an internet site dedicated to promoting and supporting UK Applied Artists and Design Makers.  Visit our site and see the delightful handmade items for sale.

So with this in mind, I am creating anew training facility for a variety of skills and interst.  There will be a series of sessions on offer.  These sessions will be focused initially as taster sessions, where people will be able to try out a new skill.  If they then wish to continue with that skill subject then they can opt for follow up group of classes.  This will give people an opportunity to try out new skills, obtain information and knowledge, have a go, and the opportunity to meet other likeminded people.

The training will focus on skills that give the trainee a new skill, interest and provide useful insight into working with new materials to create useful and pleasing items for themselves, their families, their home or for sale.  This could lead to further skills being acquired, further training opportunities and expanding career options.

We aim to sstart the courses in Autumn 2010 and have a number of courses being designed.  These include:

Photography: getting the best out of your digital camera and computer, create your own calendar and family album;

Learn to paint;

Working with Silver – create beautiful accessories and jewellery;

Jewellery and tiara making – using beads, crystals, wire and stones;

Basic craft skills – learn to knit, crochet, sew, weave, embroider etc

Patchwork and Quilting for beginners – learn basic quilting techniques;

Cross stitch for beginners – learn how to use a pattern and create a card;

Card making – sumptuous paper craft;

And others to follow.

If you would like to know more details or indeed have a craft skill you would like to share with others, please contact us at enquiries@craft-e.co.uk

CRAFT-E NEWSLETTER – May 2010

May 20th, 2010

The last few weeks have been very encouraging as we have seen a lot of work coming together.

Marketing

www.craft-e.co.uk is now being marketed in national magazines. Issue 209 May/June Craftsman craft&design magazine has run an advertorial piece on www.craft-e.co.uk. There are also advertisements in the classified section of Craftsman craft&design magazine and Crafts Beautiful June 2010. Work is now concentrating on the next round of PR and advertising.

Categories

In March we had 10 categories covered by Registered Providers and this has now grown to 13. We anticipate a steady growth in the range and diversity of the quality products available on the website.

Enquiries

We have seen a number of new enquiries in the site and the web traffic has increased by 75%. There have also been enquiries from groups.

Training

I sent out an e-mail recently asking those interested to get in touch if you would be interested in providing training courses. Please contact: enquiries@craft-e.co.uk for more details.

Promotion of your website and Links

You can now link to/from your website to www.craft-e.co.uk. This gives you the www.craft-e.co.uk logo on your website and when someone clicks on it (whilst on your website) they will be taken to www.craft-e.co.uk website where they will be able to view and buy your products. This gives you access to an e-commerce facility without the expense of developing, maintaining and marketing one yourself. If you already have an e-commerce facility then you maximise your chances of a sale. (We all know that many sales are jeopardised when customers get lost in website navigation)

Additionally as www.craft-e.co.uk is being marketed and promoted, the Search Engine Optimisation (the ‘find-ability’ on Google and the internet) is done for you.

www.craft-e.co.uk also offers the opportunity to showcase your website on the www.craft-e.co.uk website. There are designated rotational spaces on the viewing area of each screen. I am happy to provide a 50% discount offer ie the first 6 months for the price of 3. Prices are listed in the Provider area.

Rotate your Stock
Are you making the most of your interchangeability? If you have new stock items then you can advertise them under any category and change them as often as you wish.

Work4Us

Are you interested in earning a little cash? If you think you could encourage other Providers to join us you could earn yourself a commission for each one. See tab ‘Work4Us’ for details.

Photo Sizing

I have recently found a great little easy-to-use programme called VSO Image resize by Microsoft – give it a go!

Exhibitions

If you have Exhibitions coming up soon – please list them under ‘Exhibitions’ category – this will help potential buyers find your products. All entries in Exhibitions category are free and are not included in your Individual or group stock allowance. It is also useful for shoppers who saw but did not buy to find you later. www.craft-e.co.uk Provider business cards available on request. Please contact: enquiries@craft-e.co.uk for more details.

CRAFT-E NEWSLETTER – February 2010

March 1st, 2010

Hello again

Well things are really happening now – we have successfully closed the pilot scheme and have signed up a number of crafters.

Categories and Prices

The range of stock is really beginning to get exciting! A number of new Categories have been added in the last month: Wedding, Courses and Projects, Woodworking, Quilting, and Cakes!

We have changed the set-up fee so you now only pay one registration fee per year across as many categories as you wish. You can also now decide how many products you wish to upload.

You can choose from:

£10 per month (plus VAT) for 1 – 50 Products
£20 per month (plus VAT) for 51 – 100 Products.

Details have been sent out and full details are on the site in the Providers area.

Did you know you can use the ‘Classes and Projects’ Category on craft-e to advertise anything you want people to find out about?  You might want to scan in a leaflet as the ‘photo’ and use the description box to describe your classes, what’s going on, when, price per person  etc

Craft-e Logo and Links

Would you be interested in putting the craft-e logo on your website?

This will allow people from your website to find your products on craft-e. This enables them to buy your products online (we offer this to all registered Providers FOC).

For further information about putting our logo on your site, contact the support team via the contact page

Press Releases and Advertising the site

National and regional Press Releases were made on 1st February (our official start date). We used a national release and have seen awareness of the website and increases in the traffic to our website.

We have also released two press releases for April and May publications – see example of one ‘copy’ below.

We have also received local press inclusion in the Dorset Echo on Friday February 12th, under the What’s On Arts Brief and appeared in the e-Echo for What’s on.

Recruitment

Are you interested in working for Craft-e? Or do you know someone who is?

We are now actively seeking regional representatives – if you, or someone you know is interested in becoming an ambassador for Craft-e please do get in touch. We are willing to pay good remuneration for a successful application. Exciting opportunities for regional sales people to promote the web site and sign up new Providers. If you are interested please contact enquiries@craft-e.co.uk

Groups

We are now offering the chance for Groups to join our website and currently promoting to 2 local groups. There is also a Group membership rate. This is particularly important if you have a number of people who don’t have a lot of stock but together could be registered. This will provide them with a useful e-commerce outlet. If you are part of a group or know one that could be interested please get in touch enquiries@craft-e.co.uk.

More exciting news next month…

CRAFT-E NEWSLETTER – January 2010

CRAFT-E NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 2010

Happy New Year to you all!

What does 2010 have in store for us? This year is going to be a lucky year – I have a feeling…

The pilot is coming to a close with good feedback being received from a number of you. Here are some of the questions (and the answers!) our craft-e website developer colleagues have provided:

Q: Please can you advise whether both the thumbnail and the full size image needs to be loaded, when you use the same photo you get a very large screen which is difficult to navigate easily.

A: The software takes those images and resizes them for use on the shop front. Most users will be uploading huge images directly from their digital cameras. (see below)

Q: Some images load quickly and others take a minute or so – why is that?

A: Load time will be affected by how large the original picture is. Most digital camera images are exceptionally large file sizes directly from a camera, sometimes 4 or 5MB when all that is really needed is something in the region of up to 1MB.

Q; Can we have the quantity in stock to default to 1 and the low limit number to default to 0?

A; The default values for these fields have been changed accordingly.

Q; How can we check for ‘clean’ wording ie was putting on a ceramic cockerel…. Is there anything in the software that throws up an error if someone doesn’t use good language?

A: I’m afraid there is no Spell Checking in place at the moment.

Q: Prices – when £0 is entered you can go and buy it for whatever you want… It also looks like it goes to bidding. This needs to be changed and a price entered each time.

A: We must rely on our providers to fill in every field when putting a new item on. If a product is waiting to be valued, it’s recommended that our providers select the item to “Disabled” (see below)

Q: Can you move the buttons that include Add New Product to be bigger and easier to see?

A: The instructions and links on the Provider home page are now more obvious and easy to use.

Q: What are Product Options and Upselling Links?

A: Upselling is when a customer is looking at a product and they’re offered another item at a discounted or special price. These are advanced options for our Providers that will be documented in a forthcoming FAQ page.

Q: I think there may be some reservation amongst our traders as they have read your mail and think they have to start paying a subscription.

A: We did include asterisks in the welcome e-mail that explained no fees or subscriptions would be taken during the testing phase, but I understand your concerns.

Q: Please can we have a written definition for 3 options in the availability drop-down menu:
a. Available for sale (the default option)
b. Hidden, but available for sale
c. Disabled

A: a. Available for sale means that customers will be able to find the product by browsing the catalogue or by using product search.
b. Hidden, but available for sale means that the product will not be included into the product catalogue. No person will be able to find it unless he or she knows an exact URL address of the product details page of this product. This feature allows you to limit access of customers to certain products. After you finish defining the details of a ‘hidden’ product and click the Save button, the URL address of the product’s Product details page will appear below the ‘Availability’ box. You can use this URL to give your privileged customers direct access to the product. Ideal to give your best customers first opportunity of a new product by giving them a direct link.
c. Disabled means that the product will not be displayed to customers (This status may be useful if, for some reason, you do not want to sell the product for a while).

Many thanks to those who have requested changes to the categories, here are the results:

3 new categories being added:

  • Dolls Clothes
  • Children’s Knitwear
  • Teddy Bears (inc Clothes)

and 1 category – Fine Art – being split into 2:

  • Fine Art
  • Posters

So if you wish to move your Prints and Posters from the Fine Art section you can do so now, simply reselect the category you wish them to be listed in and save.

The FAQs are being written and will be available soon.

A few other suggestions have been received that are either not possible or are coming soon eg bespoke commissions, website advertising and other website links – more on that in the next Newsletter.

Pilot closure

As the pilot is coming to a close we will require you to sign up to continue to be part of craft-e. (See separate correspondence.)

Promoting the website – what we are doing

With the funds coming in from the monthly subscriptions, www.craft-e.co.uk will be promoted to possibly be publicised in the national press, magazines, radio and TV. As this develops we will send you PR information.

Promoting the website – what you can do

We still need more products and designer artisans to come onto the website and join us, so if you have any other products or you know of others who could benefit from joining us please let them know where we are and how easy it is for them to sign up and start having their products seen on the www. The more products and designer artisans we have the better range of publicity we can get!

Continue to keep in contact

Always happy to hear back from you so please do drop us a line: enquiries@craft-e.co.uk

Kind regards

Roberta

CRAFT-E NEWSLETTER – December 2009

December 11th, 2009

Welcome to the first Craft-e Newsletter to all our Providers.

We have just taken the Beta name off the website – this means that we are no longer in ‘production’ of the web-site, but in ‘pilot’, which means that we are live with limited numbers. You are receiving this Newsletter as you kindly agreed to take part in the pilot and provide us with feedback and ideas. All of your ideas will be looked at and if feasible, and in the plan for the site, will proceed to development.

We have come a long way since June 2009 when this was just an idea on a leaflet!

Since then we have:

July – Sent out leaflets, contacted many organisations and people, recruited seller for SE England, built and registered a database.

August – Researched and looked at how we are going to market the site going forward. Wrote the scope for the site and agreed it with the website builder. Agreed the budget.

September – Purchased the software and waited patiently while the website builders did their magic stuff, wrote the T&Cs, reviewed the ‘back end’ of the website and scoped the ‘front end’. Started to attract interest in the website.

October – Finished writing the T&Cs. The first Providers pilot group identified and joined Craft-e.

November – First Providers pilot group uploading their products. Discussing and assisting where necessary. Check how software works and write more explanatory words. Wrote first PR piece ready to send to press but need more providers first. Assimilating FAQs.

December – Looking at best way to market the site and ensure more providers join the site. Looking at Google Analytics, linking from other sites, obtaining recommends from Guilds and other worthy organisations. VAT rate change ready for 2010.

One of the scoped ideas at outset is to provide an area on the site where prospective purchasers can request a commissioned item. This will be in Phase II and the website company are working on this. I will provide you with an update on when we can expect this in my next newsletter/blog.

At some point the pilot will cease, I will notify you when that is, and then from that time we will be in a fully ‘Live’ situation where all the T&Cs come into effect and the charging will commence. I will be providing those that wish to continue to advertise and trade on the site with notification of charges and a Direct Debit form. The charging will be in accordance with the charging policy and relates to registration fee and number of photographs uploaded during the month. (More on this later) Once we have funds available the PR pieces will be released to the press and other worthy organisations.

So if you have any comments, queries or questions please use the website Contact Us comments box and let us know your thoughts and ideas.
